Hunter Pence is just what the All-Star Game needs

Kudos to Astros outfielder Hunter Pence and shortstop Miguel Tejada for making the National League All-Star team as reserves. For Tejada, it will be his sixth All-Star Game — second in the NL — as he continues to play at a high level at age 35.

For Pence, this will be his first trip to the Midsummer Classic, and it’s well-deserved. No one plays the game harder or with more enthusiasm as Pence, who play has yet to gain him national attention. When he chased down a foul ball during a blowout loss in San Francisco over the weekend, he fell over the bullpen mounds and then tipped his hat to the fans.

Pence will revel in his first All-Star Game. He’ll appreciate being there and sharing the clubhouse with some of the game’s greats. He’ll take it seriously, though, hoping to get a win for the NL just in case the Astros make it the World Series and need home-field advantage.

Pence will run out every ground ball and crash into the wall, just because that’s the way the game’s supposed to be played. Even if it’s an exhibition. Astros fans have come to appreciate Pence more and more with each season, and now the rest of the country can find out what they’ve been missing.

Assuming he gets to play. I’ll not be surprised if the small-market Astros get slighted and our boys sit on the bench.

Even if Hunter never gets close to the field, his enthusiasm and love of the game will undoubtedly have a positive effect upon all he encounters.

During a recent game in Phoenix, Hunter stopped by before the game to recognize and talk with some Astro fans seated along the right field line. His friendliness was so genuine, and he definitely made these people’s day.

Although I was sitting a couple of rows behind these fans, I couldn’t help but be impressed by Hunter’s gesture. It was particularly impressive when compared to Justin Upton’s fake toss to a young fan after catching a flyball to end an inning a few days later.

Brian,
My wife and I have been to 9 games this year and not once have we heard the public address announcer state the attendance at the games. We hear on the post game show what it was but are wondering why no announcement at the game. I know the attendance is nothing to brag about but still why not being announced at the game.

A little off the subject, but I was wondering if the Padres would take Bud Norris or Yorman Bazardo and Brian Bogasevic for Kevin Kouzmanoff. He’s struggling this year, but think what he could do to the Crawford boxes. What do you think, Mr. Taggart? Anyone?

Miguel certainly deseves the nod at short stop either as the #1 or #2 for the NL. Hunter has put up the numbers too, but the Astros definitely have one of the best outfields in either league. So, Carlos or Bourn would both have been good selections as #2’s or #3’s for the Midsummer Classic too… seriously, take your pick! As for the regular season however, Houston’s pitching staff needs to keep their positive strides a-coming if they want to reach the post season. If Oswalt continues to get better, Wandy stays consistant, and Ortiz and Hampton keep upping their performances, the ‘Stros have a shot. 3.5 games back in the Central can be made up in a matter of a week or two this season. http://www.basebald.com.
