Astros trying to reverse history at No. 11
The Astros will pick No. 11 overall in tonight’s First-Year Player Draft, and the history of the picks that have gone 11th through the years is underwhelming. Here are the players taken No. 11 overall since 1990. See if you recognize any of these names:
2010 – Blue Jays, RHP Deck McGuire, Georgia Tech
2009 – Rockies, Tyler Matzek, LHP, Mission Viejo, Calif.
2008 – Rangers, Justin Smoak, 1B, South Carolina
2007 – Mariners, Phillippe Aumont, RHP, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
2006 – Diamondbacks, Max Scherzer, RHP, Missouri
2005 – Pirates, Andrew McCutchen, OF, Fort Meade, Fla.
2004 – Pirates, Neil Walker, C, Gibsonia, Pa.
2003 – Indians, Michael Aubrey, 1B, Tulane
2002 – Marlins, Jeremy Hermida, OF, Marietta, Ga.
2001 – Tigers, Kenny Baugh, RHP, Rice
2000 – Brewers, Dave Krynzel, OF, Henderson, Nev.
1999 – Mariners, Ryan Christianson, C, Riverside, Calif.
1998 – Expos, Josh McKinley, SS, Dowington, Pa.
1997 – Athletics, Chris Enochs, RHP, West Virginia
1996 – Phillies, Adam Eaton, RHP, Snohomish, Wa.
1995 – Tigers, Mike Drumright, RHP, Wichita State
1994 – Pirates, Mark Farris, SS, Angleton, Texas
1993 – Indians, Daron Kirkreit, RHP, UC-Riverside
1992 – Cubs, Derek Wallace, RHP, Pepperdine
1991 – Mariners, Shawn Estes, LHP, Minden, Nev.
1990 – Expos, Shane Andrews, 3B, Carlsbad, N.M.

4 of last seven are making an impact at ML level for their current teams – that’s a bad thing?
History isn’t the most important thing on draft day (lol).
Justin Smoak is pretty good, Andrew Mccutchen is really good, Max Scherzer is pretty good, and a few others were ok. The entire baseball draft is like that no matter what pick it is. If he has anywhere near Mccutchen speed with Smoak power that would be cool.
