The Astros player development has named the following Players of the Month for May: Oklahoma City: LHP Xavier Cedeno, IF Mike Hessman, OF Brad Snyder; Corpus Christi: RHP Ross Seaton, IF Jonathan Singleton, IF Andrew Simunic; Lancaster: RHP Tyson Perez, OF George Springer, IF Jonathan Meyer; Lexington: LHP Luis Cruz, IF Matt Duffy, C Roberto Pena. These awards are chosen every month by the field staff of each team.
Triple A Oklahoma City
LHP Xavier Cedeno, Pitcher of the Month: 1-0, 0.63 ERA (1ER/14.1IP), 14 SO, .184 (9×49) opponents avg. in 11 appearances in May
IF Mike Hessman, Offensive Player of the Month: .338 (24×71), 16 R, 3 2B, 8 HR, 17 RBI, 12 BB in 23 games in May
OF Brad Snyder, Defensive Player of the Month: 36 games in the OF, 1.000 FP (0E/59TC)
Notes: Xavier Cedeno has compiled a 2-0 record to go along with a 0.42 ERA (1ER/21.1IP) and 20 strikeouts in 17 overall appearances this season at Oklahoma City…had his contract purchased by Houston on May 29 to take the roster spot of the DL’d LHP Fernando Abad…has held Triple A lefties to a .029 (1×34) batting average this year…Mike Hessman was named the PCL Player of the Week after going 9×17 (.529 average) with five homers and three doubles over five games during the week of May 14-20…Brad Snyder has not committed an error in 59 total chances and 36 games in the outfield…has played 22 games in right field this season.

IF Andrew Simunic, Defensive Player of the Month: 45 games, 37 at 3B, .979 FP (3E/142TC), 96 assists this season
Notes: Ross Seaton posted a 3-1 record with a 2.70 ERA during six starts in May…had quality starts in each of his final five outings in the month…Jonathan Singleton, who was acquired by the Astros organization as part of the Hunter Pence deal, blasted seven homers to go along with 24 RBI and a .400 on-base percentage during the month of May…he was named the Texas League Player of the Week after his 12-hit (12×24), four-home run week over six games from May 21-27…the lefty has hit at a .358 (44×123) clip with nine home runs against right-handed pitching this year…Andrew Simunic has put up a .979 fielding percentage in 45 games this season…in 37 games at 3B has committed just three errors.

Notes: Tyson Perez has started five games this season, all in May, and has posted a 3-1 record with a 3.90 ERA (14ER/32.1IP)…was named the California League Pitcher of the Week for May 14-20 after hurling a one-run, two-hit complete game at Inland Empire…athe17th-round pick in 2011 won his first three starts of the season with Lancaster…George Springer scored 26 times, collected 14 extra-base hits and swiped seven bags with Lancaster during the month of May…last year’s 11th overall pick was named the California League Player of the Week during his 12×23 (.522 average), five home run tear in seven games during the week of May 7-13…Jonathan Meyer has been named a Defensive Player of the Month in the Astros system for the sixth time in his four-year career and the second time this season…has posted a .957 fielding percentage in 50 games as Lancaster’s everyday third baseman.

Notes: Luis Cruz went undefeated (4-0) in six May starts, posting a 1.85 ERA…has posted quality starts in six of his eight total starts…Cruz currently ranks T-2nd in the South Atlantic League with 63.1 innings pitched…Matt Duffy hit safely in 21 of his 28 games in May…has hit at a .316 (66×209) clip with eight homers this year…Roberto Pena has committed just three errors in his 32 games at catcher this season.
Astros name Minor League Players of Month for August
The Astros’ player development department has named the following Players of the Month for August:
Triple-A Round Rock: RHP Roy Corcoran posted a 1-1 record with one save and a 2.13 ERA in nine games in August to earn Round Rock Pitcher of the Month honors. OF Drew Locke was named Offensive Player of the Month for the third consecutive month after hitting .303 with 14 extra-base hits, including nine doubles, and 18 RBIs in 27 August games. IF Edwin Maysonet received Round Rock’s Defensive Player of the Month honors after playing in 24 games with the Express last month. For the season, he has posted a .989 fielding percentage in 85 games.
Double-A Corpus Christi: After posting a 2.39 seven games, four starts, in August, RHP Erick Abreu was named Pitcher of the Month for the Hooks. OF J.D. Martinez was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .324 with a .378 on-base percentage and 17 RBIs. IF Michael Affronti earned Defensive Player of the Month honors for the second straight month and owns a .972 fielding percentage during his time with the Hooks in 2010.
Class A Advanced Lancaster: JetHawks Pitcher of the Month RHP Kyle Godfrey owned a 1-0 record and a 1.31 ERA in 10 relief appearances in August. OF Brian Pellegrini hit .260 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs to win Lancaster’s Offensive Player of the Month award. The Defensive Player of the Month was IF Andrew Simunic, who has posted a .955 fielding percentage while splitting time at third base and the outfield this year.
Class A Lexington: Pitcher of the Month RHP Jose Cisnero finished 2-1 in August with a 3.31 ERA in six starts for Lexington. OF Jacob Goebbert was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .390 with a .453 on-base percentage and 27 RBIs in 27 games. IF Jonathan Meyer received Defensive Player of the Month honors and owns a .914 fielding percentage in 119 games as Lexington’s third baseman in 2010.
Short-Season A Tri-City: After posting a 2-0 record in six games, five starts, with a 1.19 ERA (4ER/30.1IP) in August, RHP David Martinez was named Pitcher of the Month for the ValleyCats. IF Ben Orloff was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .278 with 13 steals, a .397 on-base percentage and 22 runs scored as the ValleyCats leadoff man. OF Daniel Adamson earned Defensive Player of the Month honors and owns a .969 fielding percentage this season.
Rookie Greeneville: Astros Pitcher of the Month LHP Garrett Bullock owned a 1-1 record and a 0.86 ERA in eight games in relief for Greeneville in August. OF Telvin Nash hit .277 with six doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs to earn the Offensive Player of the Month award. The Defensive Player of the Month was IF Hector Rodriguez, who owns a .952 fielding percentage while playing shortstop and third base this season.
Rookie Gulf Coast League: RHP Matison Smith posted a 1-2 record and a 1.88 ERA in nine relief appearances in August to earn GCL Astros Pitcher of the Month honors. OF Jordan Scott was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .382 with 4 doubles and a .440 on-base percentage in 20 August games. IF Joshua Magee received Astros’ Defensive Player of the Month honors after playing in 42 games with the GCL club this season.
Rookie Dominican Summer League: RHP Luis Alayon posted a 2-0 record and a 1.89 ERA in three starts to earn Pitcher of the Month honors for the DSL Astros. The Offensive Player of the Month honor was awarded to OF Luis De La Rosa, who hit .271 with four doubles in 14 games. IF Mario Gonzalez earned the Defensive Player of the Month for the Astros after posting a .993 fielding percentage in 60 games this season.
Astros announce Minor League Players of the Month
Here are the Astros’ Minor League players of the month for June, as chosen by the field staff of each team:
- Triple A-Round Rock: RHP Josh Banks posted a 3-1 record and a 1.50 ERA in four starts in June to earn his second consecutive Round Rock Pitcher of the Month honors. Outfielder Drew Locke was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .317 with 14 extra-base hits, including 10 doubles, and 15 RBIs in 28 June games. C Jason Castro, who’s been playing with the Astros since June 22, received Round Rock’s Defensive Player of the Month honors after playing in 15 games with the Express this month. On the season, he posted a .994 fielding percentage and caught 13 of 34 attempted base stealers at Triple-A.
- Double-A Corpus Christi: After posting a 1-2 record and a 2.10 ERA in five games, four starts, in June, RHP Jordan Lyles was named Pitcher of the Month for the Hooks. Lyles, 19, was also named to the XM All-Star Futures Game and the Texas League All-Star game in June. OF J.B. Shuck was named Offensive Player of the Month for the second straight month after hitting .347 with a .426 on-base percentage and seven RBIs. 3B Jhon Florentino, who has played 70 games at third base this season, earned Defensive Player of the Month honors and owns a .936 fielding percentage at the hot corner in 2010.
- Class A Advanced Lancaster: JetHawks Pitcher of the Month LHP Patrick Urckfitz owned a 1-0 record and a 2.08 ERA, while striking out 25 and walking only three in six games (one start) in June. OF Lee Cruz hit .400 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 21 RBIs en route to receiving the Offensive Player of the Month award. The Defensive Player of the Month was OF Brandon Barnes, who has posted a .969 fielding percentage with 15 outfield assists while playing primarily right field this season.
- Class A Lexington: Pitcher of the Month RHP Zach Grimmett finished the month 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and posted a 0.85 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) in seven relief appearances for Lexington. OF J.D. Martinez was named Offensive Player of the Month for the second time this season after hitting .356 with 14 extra-base hits, a .420 on-base percentage and 13 RBIs in 25 games. OF Jacob Goebbert received Defensive Player of the Month honors for the second time this season and owns a .985 fielding percentage as Lexington’s left fielder in 2010.
- Rookie Level Dominican Summer League: LHP Francisco Baso posted a 3-3 record with one save and a 2.93 ERA in six games to earn Pitcher of the Month honors for the DSL Astros. The Offensive Player of the Month honor was awarded to 2B Yonathan Mejia, who hit .310 with seven RBIs. OF Ydarqui Marte earned the Defensive Player of the Month for the Astros after posting a .983 fielding percentage with four outfield assists in 31 games in the outfield this season.
