After becoming the first organization since Pittsburgh in 2003 to have six Minor League teams make the playoffs, the Astros’ player development department also announced August’s Minor League Pitchers and Players of the Month at their eight Minor League affiliates. These awards are chosen every month by the field staff of each team.
At Triple-A Oklahoma City, LHP Eric Berger earned Pitcher of the Month honors after going 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA, 22 strikeouts and a .122 opponent’s batting average in 11 games (one start) in August. The 27-year-old lefty was acquired by the Astros from the Indians in exchange for C Chris Wallace on April 14. IF Brandon Laird was named OKC’s Player of the Month after hitting .306 with six doubles, four homers, 24 RBIs and a .366 on-base percentage in 29 August games. Laird’s 33 doubles ranked tied for fourth in the PCL this year.
At Double-A Corpus Christi, RHP Jonas Dufek was named Pitcher of the Month while IF Erik Castro was named the Hooks Player of the Month. Dufek led the Texas League with six wins in the month of August, posting a 6-0 record with a 0.61 ERA, three saves, 14 strikeouts and just one walk in 11 games. A ninth-round pick, he posted a combined 3.19 ERA this year between Lancaster (36 games) and Corpus Christi (14 games) in his first season in a relief role. Castro hit .340 with eight doubles, four homers, 17 RBIs and a .980 OPS in 27 games in August. He finished third in the Texas League with an .848 OPS.
At Class A Lancaster, Pitcher of the Month was LHP Colton Cain, as the Waxahachie, Texas, native went 3-0 with a 3.24 ERA and 22 strikeouts in five August starts. Cain was acquired from the Pirates in the Wandy Rodriguez trade in July of 2012. IF Delino DeShields was named the club’s Player of the Month after hitting .349 with nine doubles, 15 stolen bases and a .907 OPS in 25 games in August. DeShields finished third in the California League in hitting (.313) and runs scored (100), and second in OBP (.405), stolen bases (51) and triples (14).
At Class A Quad Cities, LHP Brian Holmes received Pitcher of the Month honors while IF Rio Ruiz took home Player of the Month honors for the second consecutive month. Holmes went 2-0 and allowed just two earned runs in 23 2/3 innings with 21 strikeouts across four starts in August. Ruiz hit .298 with five homers, 19 RBIs and a .558 slugging percentage in 28 games in August. He was one of the Midwest League’s premier hitters over the second half of the season, as he posted a .291 average with 20 doubles, eight homers and an .876 OPS from July through the end of the season.
At short-season Tri-City, RHP Gonzalo Sanudo earned Pitcher of the Month award after not allowing a run in 13 innings in August, striking out 20 with just one walk. Sanudo was acquired by the Astros from the Twins in exchange for OF Mike Kvasnicka on March 25, and walked just four batters while striking out 51 in 38 2/3 combined innings between Corpus Christi, Tri-City and Greeneville this season. IF Conrad Gregor hit .324 with 17 RBIs and a .372 on-base percentage in 27 games in August en route to getting named the club’s Player of the Month. Gregor was taken by the Astros in the fourth round of the 2013 draft out of Vanderbilt.
At rookie-league Greeneville, RHP Raul Rivera and IF Chase McDonald were named the Pitcher and Player of the Month, respectively. Rivera didn’t allow an earned run and struck out 11 strikeouts and walked one 11 2/3 innings in August, while McDonald hit .265 with four doubles, a triple, two homers and 17 RBIs in 24 games during the month.
At Gulf Coast League Astros, RHP Joe Musgrove was named the Pitcher of the Month after putting up a 1.96 ERA with 17 strikeouts in six outings in August. IF Yonathan Mejia took home Player of the Month honors for the second straight month, as he hit at a .292 clip with 11 doubles and 14 RBIs in 29 August games. Mejia finished fifth in the GCL with a .324 batting average and led the league in doubles (19) and total bases (97).
For the Dominican Summer League Astros, RHP Angel Heredia was named the Pitcher of the Month and OF Brauly Mejia was named the Player of the Month. Heredia saved six games and gave up one earned run in 10 1/3 innings in August (0.87 ERA). He finished tied for third in the DSL with 13 saves. Mejia hit .297 with a .375 OBP in 18 games during the month.
The Astros player development department has named May’s Minor League Pitchers and Players of the Month at each of their four full-season minor league affiliates. These awards are chosen every month by the field staff of each team.
TRIPLE-A OKLAHOMA CITY
LHP Brett Oberholtzer was named Pitcher of the Month after going 2-2 with a 2.42 ERA (7ER/26IP) and 27 strikeouts in five starts in May. He was named the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 6-13 and held opponents to a .198 (18×91) batting average during the month. IF Brett Wallace was named the RedHawks Player of the Month after hitting .324 (34×105) with six doubles, six homers, 26 RBI and a .403 on-base percentage in 28 games in May. Wallace is hitting .319 (51×160) with eight homers and a .948 OPS in 41 total games at OKC.
DOUBLE-A CORPUS CHRISTI
RHP Jake Buchanan went 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0ER/27.2IP) in six May outings to earn Corpus Christi’s Pitcher of the Month honors. The Astros 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year currently leads all of minor league baseball with a 0.85 ERA and has allowed just five walks all season in 63.1 innings pitched. He was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 29-May 6. IF Erik Castro was named the Hooks Player of the Month after hitting .360 in 24 May games, raising his season batting average by 88 points from .206 to .294. Castro added 10 doubles, four homers, 20 RBI and a 1.031 OPS (.424 OBP/.607 SLG) during the month.
CLASS A LANCASTER
LHP Theron Geith was named Lancaster Pitcher of the Month after going 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA (4ER/15.1IP) and 10 strikeouts in 10 relief outings for the JetHawks. Geith has posted a 5-0 record with a 2.22 ERA (6ER/24.1IP) on the season. He was acquired by the Astros last year as a PTBNL in the Ben Francisco trade with Tampa Bay. Lancaster’s Player of the Month award went to OF Preston Tucker, who leads all of minor league baseball with 57 RBI. A seventh round draft pick by the Astros last year, Tucker hit .342 (39×114) with seven doubles, one triple, five homers, 30 RBI and a .400 OBP in 29 games in May. He recently had a 17-game hitting streak from May 16-June 2.
CLASS A QUAD CITIES
A pair of Astros 2012 first-round draft picks earned May awards for Quad Cities, with RHP Lance McCullers receiving Pitcher of the Month honors and IF Carlos Correa receiving Player of the Month honors. McCullers earned his first career win while posting a 1.88 ERA (5ER/24IP) and 26 strikeouts over seven outings in May. The 41st overall selection in last year’s draft currently leads the Midwest League with a 1.70 ERA. Correa hit .349 (30×86) with six doubles, one triple, 18 RBI and a .423 on-base percentage in 22 May games. Last year’s first overall selection in the draft entered the season as the third-youngest player in the Midwest League and is hitting .275 (47×171) with 10 doubles, one triple, three homers, 34 RBI, five stolen bases and 26 walks (.380 OBP) in 44 total games this season. Both players were also named Midwest League All-Stars.
The Astros five active minor league affiliates have combined to post a 137-98 (.583) record, which ranks first out of all Major League organizations. Each of the four domestic affiliates are over .500, and three of the four are currently in first place in their divisions.

Triple-A Round Rock: RHP Roy Corcoran posted a 1-1 record with one save and a 2.13 ERA in nine games in August to earn Round Rock Pitcher of the Month honors. OF Drew Locke was named Offensive Player of the Month for the third consecutive month after hitting .303 with 14 extra-base hits, including nine doubles, and 18 RBIs in 27 August games. IF Edwin Maysonet received Round Rock’s Defensive Player of the Month honors after playing in 24 games with the Express last month. For the season, he has posted a .989 fielding percentage in 85 games.
Double-A Corpus Christi: After posting a 2.39 seven games, four starts, in August, RHP Erick Abreu was named Pitcher of the Month for the Hooks. OF J.D. Martinez was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .324 with a .378 on-base percentage and 17 RBIs. IF Michael Affronti earned Defensive Player of the Month honors for the second straight month and owns a .972 fielding percentage during his time with the Hooks in 2010.
Class A Advanced Lancaster: JetHawks Pitcher of the Month RHP Kyle Godfrey owned a 1-0 record and a 1.31 ERA in 10 relief appearances in August. OF Brian Pellegrini hit .260 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs to win Lancaster’s Offensive Player of the Month award. The Defensive Player of the Month was IF Andrew Simunic, who has posted a .955 fielding percentage while splitting time at third base and the outfield this year.
Class A Lexington: Pitcher of the Month RHP Jose Cisnero finished 2-1 in August with a 3.31 ERA in six starts for Lexington. OF Jacob Goebbert was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .390 with a .453 on-base percentage and 27 RBIs in 27 games. IF Jonathan Meyer received Defensive Player of the Month honors and owns a .914 fielding percentage in 119 games as Lexington’s third baseman in 2010.
Short-Season A Tri-City: After posting a 2-0 record in six games, five starts, with a 1.19 ERA (4ER/30.1IP) in August, RHP David Martinez was named Pitcher of the Month for the ValleyCats. IF Ben Orloff was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .278 with 13 steals, a .397 on-base percentage and 22 runs scored as the ValleyCats leadoff man. OF Daniel Adamson earned Defensive Player of the Month honors and owns a .969 fielding percentage this season.
Rookie Greeneville: Astros Pitcher of the Month LHP Garrett Bullock owned a 1-1 record and a 0.86 ERA in eight games in relief for Greeneville in August. OF Telvin Nash hit .277 with six doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs to earn the Offensive Player of the Month award. The Defensive Player of the Month was IF Hector Rodriguez, who owns a .952 fielding percentage while playing shortstop and third base this season.
Rookie Gulf Coast League: RHP Matison Smith posted a 1-2 record and a 1.88 ERA in nine relief appearances in August to earn GCL Astros Pitcher of the Month honors. OF Jordan Scott was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .382 with 4 doubles and a .440 on-base percentage in 20 August games. IF Joshua Magee received Astros’ Defensive Player of the Month honors after playing in 42 games with the GCL club this season.
Rookie Dominican Summer League: RHP Luis Alayon posted a 2-0 record and a 1.89 ERA in three starts to earn Pitcher of the Month honors for the DSL Astros. The Offensive Player of the Month honor was awarded to OF Luis De La Rosa, who hit .271 with four doubles in 14 games. IF Mario Gonzalez earned the Defensive Player of the Month for the Astros after posting a .993 fielding percentage in 60 games this season.

- Triple A-Round Rock: RHP Josh Banks posted a 3-1 record and a 1.50 ERA in four starts in June to earn his second consecutive Round Rock Pitcher of the Month honors. Outfielder Drew Locke was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .317 with 14 extra-base hits, including 10 doubles, and 15 RBIs in 28 June games. C Jason Castro, who’s been playing with the Astros since June 22, received Round Rock’s Defensive Player of the Month honors after playing in 15 games with the Express this month. On the season, he posted a .994 fielding percentage and caught 13 of 34 attempted base stealers at Triple-A.
- Double-A Corpus Christi: After posting a 1-2 record and a 2.10 ERA in five games, four starts, in June, RHP Jordan Lyles was named Pitcher of the Month for the Hooks. Lyles, 19, was also named to the XM All-Star Futures Game and the Texas League All-Star game in June. OF J.B. Shuck was named Offensive Player of the Month for the second straight month after hitting .347 with a .426 on-base percentage and seven RBIs. 3B Jhon Florentino, who has played 70 games at third base this season, earned Defensive Player of the Month honors and owns a .936 fielding percentage at the hot corner in 2010.
- Class A Advanced Lancaster: JetHawks Pitcher of the Month LHP Patrick Urckfitz owned a 1-0 record and a 2.08 ERA, while striking out 25 and walking only three in six games (one start) in June. OF Lee Cruz hit .400 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 21 RBIs en route to receiving the Offensive Player of the Month award. The Defensive Player of the Month was OF Brandon Barnes, who has posted a .969 fielding percentage with 15 outfield assists while playing primarily right field this season.
- Class A Lexington: Pitcher of the Month RHP Zach Grimmett finished the month 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and posted a 0.85 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) in seven relief appearances for Lexington. OF J.D. Martinez was named Offensive Player of the Month for the second time this season after hitting .356 with 14 extra-base hits, a .420 on-base percentage and 13 RBIs in 25 games. OF Jacob Goebbert received Defensive Player of the Month honors for the second time this season and owns a .985 fielding percentage as Lexington’s left fielder in 2010.
- Rookie Level Dominican Summer League: LHP Francisco Baso posted a 3-3 record with one save and a 2.93 ERA in six games to earn Pitcher of the Month honors for the DSL Astros. The Offensive Player of the Month honor was awarded to 2B Yonathan Mejia, who hit .310 with seven RBIs. OF Ydarqui Marte earned the Defensive Player of the Month for the Astros after posting a .983 fielding percentage with four outfield assists in 31 games in the outfield this season.
