The Astros’ player development department has named the July Minor League Pitchers and Players of the Month at each of the team’s Minor League affiliates. These awards are chosen every month by the field staff of each team.
At Triple A Oklahoma City, LHP Kevin Chapman was named Pitcher of the Month after going 1-0 with six saves, 20 strikeouts, four walks and a 2.53 ERA in 12 games in July. In his 40 games at Triple-A this season, the left-hander has recorded 62 strikeouts and a 1.31 ERA, while posting the best strikeouts per nine innings ratio (13.50) in the entire Pacific Coast League (min. 40 innings). Oklahoma City’s July Player of the Month award went to C Carlos Perez, who hit .338 with three doubles, one homer and a .420 on-base percentage in 21 July games. The 23-year-old backstop has thrown out 32.2 percent of all baserunners attempting to steal this season, which ranks seventh in the PCL.
RHP Tyson Perez went 1-0 with five saves, seven strikeouts and just two walks in his 10 2/3 innings in July en route to Corpus Christi Pitcher of the Month honors. Selected by the Astros in the 17th round of the 2011 draft, Perez has gone 3-0 with a 2.54 ERA and eight saves with the Hooks this season. IF Telvin Nash received Corpus Christi’s Player of the Month award after batting .328 with 10 homers, 20 RBIs and a 1.247 OPS in 20 July games. The 2009 third-round pick led all Double-A players in OPS and slugging in July, while ranking tied for first in homers. His 18 homers this season are the most in the Texas League.
Earning his second Lancaster Pitcher of the Month Award was LHP Josh Hader, who went 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA and 29 strikeouts in five games in July. The 20-year-old southpaw is 9-2 and leads the California League in ERA (2.70) and WHIP (1.10) while ranking third in strikeouts (112). IF Rio Ruiz was named Lancaster’s July Player of the Month after hitting .333 with 12 doubles, one triple, four homers, 21 RBI and a 1.005 OPS in 26 games. Ranked by ESPN.com as the No. 47 prospect in baseball two weeks ago, Ruiz has hit .303 with 30 doubles, 11 homers, 71 RBI and a .394 on-base percentage in 108 games with Lancaster this season.
LHP Albert Minnis was named the Class A Quad Cities July Pitcher of the Month, as he went 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA and 15 strikeouts in six outings during the month. IF Chase McDonald received River Bandits Player of the Month honors after hitting .362 with nine doubles, six homers, 19 RBI and a 1.083 OPS in 26 July games.
At Class A Short Season Tri-City, RHP Troy Scribner was named the July Pitcher of the Month after posting a 5-0 record with a 0.79 ERA and 40 strikeouts in six July starts. Recently promoted to Quad Cities, Scribner has gone 9-1 with a 1.53 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 13 total outings between Tri-City (10 games) and Corpus Christi (three games). After getting selected by the Astros in the 14th round of this year’s Draft, IF Nick Tanielu earned Tri-City’s July Player of the Month honors. The 21-year-old hit .344 with seven doubles, one triple, two homers, 29 RBIs and a .380 on-base percentage in his 23 games in July.
At rookie-level Greeneville, RHP Angel Heredia allowed just one earned run in 18 innings in July (0.50 ERA) while striking out 22 batters en route to Pitcher of the Month honors. A product of the Astros Dominican Academy, Heredia has put up a 1.75 ERA this season with the Astros and as not allowed a run in his last 13 1/3 innings pitched. OF Jason Martin was named the club’s Player of the Month for July after hitting .293 with seven doubles, four triples, nine RBIs and a .403 on-base percentage during the month. Martin, who was selected by the Astros in the eighth round of the 2013 draft, posted a 16-game hitting streak from July 3-21.
RHP Elieser Hernandez and OF Alexander Melendez received the GCL Pitcher and Player of the Month awards for July. The 19-year-old Hernandez went 3-1 with a 3.71 ERA and 26 strikeouts during the month, while Melendez hit .385 with a .903 OPS in 23 July games.
In the Dominican Summer League, the Astros named a pitcher and player of the month for each of their two clubs. For the DSL Astros Blue club, LHP Salvador Montano (2-1, 2.35 ERA, 28 K’s, 23 innings) received Pitcher of the Month honors while OF Rodrigo Ayarza (.287, eight doubles, one homer, 17 RBIs, .385 OBP) picked up Player of the Month honors.
For the DSL Astros Orange club, RHP Juan Hernandez (1-1, 2.89 ERA, 13 K’s, 18 2/3 innings) was named Pitcher of the Month and IF Frankeny Fernandez (.322, seven doubles, three triples, one homer, 18 RBIs, 15 steals, .430 OBP) was named Player of the Month. Both players were recently promoted to the Gulf Coast League Astros after their strong seasons in the DSL.

At Triple A Oklahoma City, RHP Jake Buchanan was named Pitcher of the Month after going 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in five May starts, striking out 22 and walking just five. Buchanan, an eighth-round selection by the Astros in the 2010 Draft, started the month of May with 23 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings across three starts, including his second career complete game shutout on May 20 at New Orleans. OF Domingo Santana was named the club’s Player of the Month after hitting .297 with six doubles, six homers, 16 RBIs and an .899 OPS in 30 games during the month. The 21-year-old ranks tied for seventh in the Pacific Coast League in total bases (109) and has spent the season as the second-youngest player in the league.
LHP Tommy Shirley picked up his second consecutive Double-A Corpus Christi Pitcher of the Month award after going 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA and 18 strikeouts in five May outings. Shirley’s 1.54 ERA this season ranks second in all of Double-A while his 52 strikeouts rank third in the Texas League. The club’s May Player of the Month award went to IF Matt Duffy, who hit .365 with three doubles, four homers, 20 RBI and a .941 OPS across 25 games in May. During the month, he ranked second in the Texas League in batting average, tied for first in hits and fourth in OPS.
LHP Josh Hader earned Class A Advanced Lancaster Pitcher of the Month honors after compiling a 4-0 record with a 1.95 ERA and 33 strikeouts in five May outings. Acquired by the Astros from Baltimore last season in the Bud Norris trade, Hader has been one of the California League’s top pitchers. He currently ranks second in the league in ERA and strikeouts (69), and third in WHIP (0.99). IF Carlos Correa hit .330 with eight doubles, three homers, 31 RBIs and an .885 OPS in 27 May games en route to Lancaster Player of the Month honors. The first overall pick in the 2012 draft is hitting .320 this season, and leads all California League shortstops in fielding percentage (.977) despite being the youngest position player in the league (19 years old).
At Class A Quad Cities, hard-throwing RHP Jandel Gustave was named the River Bandits May Pitcher of the Month after going 4-0 with a 2.74 ERA and 20 strikeouts in five outings in May. Gustave, 21, is a product of the Astros Dominican Academy and has posted a 3.70 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 12 walks in his first year with a full-season club. C Brian Holberton, a ninth round selection in last year’s draft, was named the club’s Player of the Month after hitting .388 with nine doubles, three homers, 15 RBI and a 1.063 OPS in 21 games in May. Holberton hit for the cycle in a 5-for-5 performance on May 18 at Kane County, and ranks second in the Midwest League with a .344 batting average (minimum 100 plate appearances).

At Triple-A Oklahoma City, LHP Rudy Owens was named Pitcher of the Month after going 2-0 with a 3.95 ERA in seven games (four starts) in April. Owens struck out 26 batters and walked just two in his 27 1/3 innings while holding opponents to a .233 batting average. The club’s Player of the Month honors went to IF Jon Singleton, who led the Pacific Coast League in homers (nine) and ranked second in RBIs (27) during the month of April. In his 26 total games in April, Singleton hit .293 (29-for-99) while adding six doubles, one triple and a 1.045 OPS.
LHP Tommy Shirley was named Double-A Corpus Christi’s Pitcher of the Month after going 2-2 with a 1.27 ERA and 34 strikeouts in six April games (four starts) as part of the Hooks piggy-back starting rotation. Shirley posted the third-lowest ERA in the Texas League during the month, striking out 34 batters and walking just four in his 28 1/3 innings. OF Preston Tucker earned the Hooks Player of the Month honors after hitting .295 (31-for-105) with nine doubles, six homers, 17 RBIs and a .909 OPS across 26 games in April. The 2012 seventh-round pick shared a tie for the Texas League lead in homers and RBI for the month, and led all league hitters in extra base hits (15) and total bases (58).
RHP Kyle Smith earned Class A advanced Lancaster Pitcher of the Month honors after compiling a 4-0 record with a 2.60 ERA and 31 strikeouts in seven games (three starts). Acquired by the Astros from Kansas City last season in the Justin Maxwell trade, Smith was promoted to Corpus Christi after his strong month in the hitter-friendly California League. Lancaster’s Player of the Month award went to 2B Tony Kemp, who leads all Astros’ Minor Leaguers in batting average (.325) and hits (38). A fifth-round selection by the Astros in last year’s draft, Kemp hit .311 (32-for-103) with seven doubles, three triples, two homers, 11 stolen bases and a .911 OPS in 26 games in April for the JetHawks.
At Class A Quad Cities, RHP Gonzalo Sanudo was named the River Bandits’ April Pitcher of the Month after going 3-0 with a 0.50 ERA and 14 strikeouts in five games (two starts) during the month. He gave up his first run of the season on April 27, which snapped a streak of 40 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to July 9 of last season. The Mexican-native was acquired by Houston from Minnesota in exchange for OF Mike Kvasnicka on March 25, 2013, and was converted to a starter this season.The Quad Cities Player of the Month award went to OF Brett Phillips, who hit .301 with three triples, two homers and an .840 OPS in 23 games in April. Phillips was a sixth-round Draft selection by the Astros in 2012.

TRIPLE-A OKLAHOMA CITY
RHP Jarred Cosart was named Pitcher of the Month after posting a 3-0 record and a 2.63 ERA (8ER/27.1IP) in six games (five starts) for the RedHawks. He allowed just a .190 (19×100) opponent’s batting average and led the club with 29 strikeouts in his 27.1 innings pitched. IF Marc Krauss was named the RedHawks Player of the Month after hitting .333 (26×78) with five doubles, six home runs and 25 RBI in 23 games in April. Krauss ranks tied for first among all Astros minor leaguers in RBI and ranks seventh in the Pacific Coast League in that category.
DOUBLE-A CORPUS CHRISTI
RHP Asher Wojciechowski was named Double A Corpus Christi’s Pitcher of the Month after going 2-1 with a save and a 2.08 ERA (6ER/26IP) in six games (three starts) for the Hooks. He allowed just 17 hits and seven walks in his 26.0 innings for a 0.92 WHIP, which ranked sixth in the Texas League. OF George Springer earned Player of the Month honors after posting a .297 (27×91) average, with eight doubles, eight home runs and 20 RBI in 25 games in April. He leads all Astros minor leaguers in home runs and ranks tied for first in the Texas League in home runs and third in OPS (.398OBP/.625SLG).
CLASS A LANCASTER
LHP Luis Cruz earned Class A Lancaster Pitcher of the Month honors after compiling a 1-1 record with one save and a 3.47 ERA (9ER/23.1IP) in six games (three starts). Drafted by Houston out of Puerto Rico in the ninth round of the June 2008 Draft, Cruz fanned 30 hitters in 23.1 inning pitched in April. Lancaster’s Player of the Month went to SS Nolan Fontana, who leads all Astros minor leaguers with a .508 on-base percentage. In April, Fontana hit .365 (31×85) with 22 runs scored, seven doubles, two homers and 19 RBI in 24 games for the JetHawks. Fontana leads the California League in walks (27) and runs scored (24), while ranking second in OBP and third in hits.
CLASS A QUAD CITIES
A second-round draft pick by Houston in the June 2010 draft, RHP Vince Velasquez went 3-0 with two saves and a 2.45 ERA (7ER/25.2IP) in six games (three starts) en route to being named Class A Quad Cities Pitcher of the Month. Velasquez had 31 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched last month, while allowing just a .156 (14×90) opponent’s batting average. OF Teoscar Hernandez was named the club’s Player of the Month after hitting .297 (27×91) with 18 runs scored, seven doubles, 12 RBI and eight stolen bases in 21 games. Hernandez leads the River Bandits in runs scored, hits, doubles, triples (3) and steals.
